Minimally Invasive Heart Bypass Surgery (MICS CABG) at Heartology

Heart bypass surgery at Heartology can be performed with a minimally invasive approach (MICS CABG) for suitable patients: smaller incisions without cutting the breastbone, with the same revascularization goal.

Jakarta, 28 August 2026. At Heartology Cardiovascular Hospital, heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting, CABG) can be performed with a minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) approach for suitable patients. Unlike conventional surgery, which opens the breastbone (sternotomy), MICS CABG is done through smaller incisions without cutting the breastbone.

The Same Goal as Conventional Surgery

Dr. dr. Dudy Arman Hanafy, Sp.BTKV, Subsp. JD(K), MARS explained that both methods share the same goal: creating new routes for blood to bypass blocked coronary arteries and achieve complete revascularization. dr. Widya Trianita Suwatri, Sp.BTKV, Subsp. JD(K) said that the research she cited in patients with blockages in several coronary arteries showed complete revascularization in 95.5 percent of MICS CABG patients, comparable to 96.3 percent with sternotomy. In the MICS group, 96.2 percent of grafts were rated good on angiography before discharge.

Another study cited, in coronary heart disease patients with type 2 diabetes, recorded median blood loss during surgery of about 600 mL with MICS, compared with 700 mL with conventional surgery.

Recovery and Patient Suitability

In conventional surgery, the opened breastbone needs about 12 weeks to heal. Because the breastbone stays intact in MICS, patients do not need to wait for that healing, and the risk of breastbone-related complications such as infection may be lower. Not every patient is suitable for MICS, however: the surgical approach is decided by the medical team after a thorough assessment of the patient’s heart and overall health.
